Dreaming of hydroponics on a winter morning

Indeed, it’s Sunday morning. Life has quieted sown outside, people are inside and probably having their coffee and their breakfast right now. Or they might still be sleeping or… better!

I am on my second cup of coffee and second cup of water. Those 4 beverages are non-negotiable on my mornings. I celebrate them and I feel fantastic. Til noon 😀 then the effect wears off and food has to take over.

Speaking of food… I have youtube on while I’m typing and this morning it decided to recommend a new channel to me called “Simple Living Alaska” (no ad, I just love the channel!) I watched 2 videos and subscribed right then and there. They grow their own food and preserve it too, because they live in extreme weather conditions so they have to be prepared.

Have I ever told you that I love this life-style? It is one of my dreams to have a biiiig, big pantry. I want to have food available at home all the time. I want to be able to have freinds and family over, open my pantry door and think “let’s feeeaast!” I don’t ever want to experience a food shortage in my life again. And a hydroponics system will help enormously with that.

I mean, can you imagine… a hydroponic’s system is pretty much self-sustained and needs very little looking after and then you store the food you harvest at home in your pantry. No more rushing to the shops, no more getting upset about other people in the shops, all you need from the shops you order and have delivered to your door while paying the deliverer well so it can be done in good conscience.

I want a big part to grow any leafy things my heart desires: salads and kales and herbs and the likes of it. I want to grow strawberries and other berries that can be grown hydroponically and maybe even brokkoli, I’d have to see if that works. I know you can grow potatoes hydroponically, I’ve seen a video where someone actually did that, but I’d much rather have a second part of my garden (preferrably attached to my house) to be long lines of pots with soil in which I want to grow caroots and other root vegetables like looong rows of garlic and onions. Potatoes will grow in extra buckets. That I’ve tried before: I know I can grow potatoes in buckets. 2 Potatoes grow at least 6-8 new ones. So now you need to do the math and think of how many of them you eat and need and then you know the buckets you start growing. Plus if you have the right (fake) conditions you can start a pot every month, all year round. Only takes 3 months from start to finish. Isn’t that cool?

BUUUUTTTTT! Both systems have be separated at all times. Why? because any soil bugs will thrive in water systems. I’ve lost so many hydroponic crops, because gnats ate the roots of anything that started growing in my water system. They came from the soil and started to eat anything I grew. Water plants first, then soil based crops. It was beyond annoying to see everything being lost over and over again.

So basically, 2 clean and separate systems should do it nicely. I hope anyways. I need to learn more about how to keep bugs at bay and I will.

What an idea, eh? For now it’s still a dream as I am still stuck in my flat in the middle of a small town. It’s nice enough to live here, but it won’t make me happy. Neither now nor in the long run. I need to be living a self-sustained life. Probably not 100% self-sustained, but hopefully a lot.

If I can grow and preserve my own food and live in a house that has self-sustained heating I’m happy. There’s so much to unpack here for future blog posts, can you tell? I’m excited and hungry!

It’s time to make and have breakfast.

Have a lovely Sunday everyone!
